History of 230 Tater Hill Road-

The farm was much larger in the late 1800s, extending at least ½ a mile up and down Tater Hill Road in each direction.
The main part of the house was built in 1865, with the ell holding the kitchen in 1895. There was a smaller building in that space that was torn down and the attached ell was put up in its place with the kitchen, woodshed and attic spaces. Once completed, the house boasted several modern conveniences of its time like an enclosed woodshed (now no longer as it was enclosed and raised to be the sitting area off the kitchen). You can see examples of this at Old Sturbridge Village. You’ll notice there is no central fireplace – in the mid-1800s, the woodstove became available and removed the need to have a huge fireplace. Woodstoves quickly became the rage – no more fear of burning yourself as you cooked over the open hearth and more importantly, no more bending! Given the need to cook over a woodstove, you can see why the kitchen is in a separate wing from the rest of the house – cooler in the summer!
The house and farm served as a boarding house during its early years, but it has stood silent witness to many, many changes over years, like the introduction of electricity, indoor plumbing (the original hand-dug well still remains in the backyard), central heat, insulation, and cars. Up until recently, old horse bridles still hung in the barn and sheds!
There was a full-scale renovation completed in 1986, bringing the house up to modern-day building codes, wiring and plumbing.
The story of the house is also a story of movement – both people and buildings. The old barn blew down during a hurricane in the early 1950s; you can still see the old stone foundation across the driveway from the house. A number of outbuildings – chicken coops, pig pens, outhouses, etc. – came and went over the years, being built as needed. The current barn dates back to the 1950s, and the garage tells an interesting story. The higher bay of the garage is because it was used to house a school bus in the late 1940s and 1950s.
